Three Sisters

Director - Scott Zigler

Production Stage Manager - Jillian McDaniel

Assistant Stage Manager - Catelynn Adams

The play Three Sisters written by Russian author and playwright Anton Chekov, was originally set in provincial Russia. For this production the director, Scott Zigler, wanted to set the production in midwest America, with the start of WWII being the war mentioned in the script. After doing research and collaborating with the director we came up with a timeline and solid aesthetic for the show. Our costumes mainly focused on the time period of 1937-1941, with the sisters having clothing more related to the 1920s. Referencing their yearning for the past and better times, they hold onto the clothes and continue to dress in them. I knew going into this production that it was on the smaller scale, and therefore would not have the time and resources as a main stage production. With this in mind I began digging through our stock to determine what we had that would work. Luckily I was able to source the majority of costumes from stock, including most of the army uniforms. As with any design that is historical, research is essential and even more so when working with uniforms. In the time period of the play was a very intense time for the US Army with many changes happening, including the uniforms. After confirming the look that the director wanted to go with, I focused on making the uniforms as accurate as possible with our time and resources. The other character that had an interesting costume story was the wife, Natasha, who was specifically remarked as to not having fashion sense in the beginning of the play. Thus I chose an outfit that was more eccentric than what the sisters would consider wearing. Through the course of the play her fashion sense evolves into something more refined.
